(January 30, 2012) With the new year, invariably there comes with it new product introductions, and what better place to show them off than at the year’s first major, the Australian Open. In addition to many other brands,  put forth the newest version of their perennial seller, the .The first time I had ever seen the Pure Drive was in 1998 when Carlos Moya won at Roland Garros even though he had been using the racquet before then. After 15 years in existence, there have been changes made, but the specs have remained consistent throughout the evolution of tennis.I even mistakenly switched to the one of the early version of the frame back in 2001. Since that time, the Pure Drive has had  and  added to it. I will admit to being out of the loop when it comes to this series of racquets today, but figured it was a good time to revisit after seeing the number of players using at least one variation in Melbourne.Since it is the original, and most popular, I chose to test out the standard Pure Drive, which has become the gold standard for tweener frames in terms of specs since taking over where  left off. In order to keep my playtest consistent, I went with my standard string set up of  in the mains and  in the crosses at 28/26kg.:
Head Size: 100 Square Inches
Length: 27 Inches
Weight: 10.6 Ounces Unstrung
Flex: 72Initial Thoughts: Over the years I’ve seen
models come and go, and they always feel pretty much the exact same in my hands when I hold them. This one is no different in terms of its feel, but the cosmetics are definitely new.Even though I was not a huge fan of the bright blue from the previous
, the new version featuring a largely black scheme complete with a lot of hologram detailing is too busy for me.On Court: Despite 11 years of racquet innovation, this frame feels only slightly different from the original that I used. The frame has become a bit more stable and more powerful, but still has a bit of a harsh feel. The Cortex system was updated to what Babolat calls the Cortex Active technology, which is designed to filter vibration to normalize the sensation to the hand. Whether it works or not is likely to be personal opinion, but with a frame that has this kind of stiffness, it needs all the help it can get. From the back of the court I was able to hit heavy topspin ground strokes off both sides, but trying to flatten out winners proved difficult as the ball tended to sail. The best shot with this racquet was the serve as I was getting more pace and plenty of spin to start off the points well.Final Thoughts: As much as racquets have changed over the years, this one can pretty simply be described like this, “A Pure Drive is a Pure Drive is a Pure Drive.” This is obviously not a bad thing as it has been one of the top selling racquets for more than a decade. If this is your kind of frame, there is nothing life-changing that will cause you to hate this version in comparison to the previous ones. At the same time, if you are like me and did not care for other versions, there is nothing ground-breaking that will bring you to Babolat now. - See more at: http://www.tennisnow.com/News/Tennis-Now-Gear-Review--Babolat-Pure-Drive-Goes-Ac.aspx#sthash.5NyNkuaN.dpuf
