Very Heavy & Unusual Vintage Harry C Lee 1920 Slotted Dreadnought Tennis Racket NOTE:  Just in time for Wimbledon.  Part of a group of 9 rackets I just found. I will list one racket a day between June 16 and June 24.  Will combine items for reduced postage for multiple purchases. MODEL: Dreadnaught Driver HEAD: Very unusual shape; stock goes from square at the throat to slightly rounded at the top.  This oblong oval is not seen too often.  Compare it to a standard shape Spalding racket in the final photo (the Spalding is for sale in another auction… not included with the Lee) WARPING: none FRAME: a couple of minor shallow cracks at the top of the head; retains some of the original tan-pale yellow paint at the throat and head.  Has the famous patented 4.5 inch “slot” that goes all the way through the shaft. THE SLOT: This design was patented in 1908 by Thompson (Philadelphia) and Mitchell (Camden, NJ across the river).  It was designed to “increase elasticity and resistance to torsional strains.” Harry C Lee must have paid royalties for the use of the design.  It seldom appears on other companies’ rackets STRINGS: seem to be original lamb gut as shown BANDING: retains both original silk cord bands on the lower part of the head; beautiful intact condition DECALS: Shown in the photos; decals are excellent and clear.  NOTE: there is a small ½ inch bit of tape residue just below the Dreadnaught decal… it should clean off with some solvent but it might not…. WEIGHT: actual weight is 15.7 ounces! STAMPS: the weight is stamped into the throat as shown in the photos: 15; also 460SR; also 8 28 22 (date of manufacture?) GRIP LARGE grooves on the four bigger sides; no grooves on the corners; this racket pre-dates leather grips so it never had grip material END CAP: original leather strip fully intact at the base of the handle; end cap intact as shown. Postage will be based on 3.5 pounds of packed weight.
