John Wannamaker & Co. Lawn Tennis Racket (c.1890)John Wanamaker (July 11, 1838 – December 12, 1922) was a United States merchant, political figure and considered  to be a major proponent of advertising and a "pioneer in marketing". He was born in Philadelphia, PA, and served as U.S. Postmaster General.
John Wannamaker was known for producing high quality products including his tennis rackets, for which he required they be made of second generation ash from up north - he even inspected the trees from which they were produced prior to approving the wood. Mr. Wannamaker named many of his racquets after local landmarks such as, “Belmont”, “Fairmont” and “Wissahickon”. The Belmont Plateau is located within Belmont Park and is the site for national landmarks such as the Underground Railroad (for fugitive slaves).
This stunningly beautiful flat top racket was "top of the line" amongst John Wanamaker's approximately 22 types of rackets produced.  The racket is in fine condition with very little wear - even the shellac covers the whole racket including the impact area. The racket was strung with just one knot. The only notable defect is some separation around parts of the wedge; hardly a detraction from its beauty. The racket shows no signs of warping.26.75" long x 9.25" widePlease review the images carefully.
