Vintage Wilson Jack Kramer Autograph Valiant "Woodie" RacquetPre-owned, 1950's Wilson "woodie" tennis racquet, Jack Kramer Autograph Valiant, Strata-Bow, Speed Flex Fibre Face; measuring 27" in length, with a 10-5/8" x 7-7/8" face(i.d. x i.d.) and a 4-5/8" grip. The Strata-Bow racquets were manufactured by Spalding, for Wilson, up until 1960 when Spalding closed the factory and bought the Snauwaert factory in Belgium. These Spalding/Wilson's can be identified by the 7 layer hoop, 5 layers of maple sandwiched between 2 layers of ash. Also identifying its timeline is the white compressed cotton fiber sheets, used to strengthen the individual laminations of the throat. The last identifier is the plastic butt cap, which were introduced in 1953, so this racquet was made between 1953-1960, when Spalding closed its doors and went overseas. Jack Kramer is quoted, in his book, "the Spalding made wood frames were the best wood racquets ever made."Some light checking noticable on throat with some minor scuffs and scrapes around outer edge of hoop. Yellowing of varnish, cosistent with age on throat from grip to hoop. Grip wrap in great condition with one minor "flap" at the bottom at butt cap. Original strings still tight with excellent rebound and no soft spots or stretching noticable. Includes Wilson zippered racquet head cover from a modern style piece, not period correct. Please look at all pictures provided as they shall be deemed as part of item description.
